Teaser Tuesday: NaNoWriMo The Return
This is a raw first draft excerpt of The Return, my NaNoWriMo story.
I can see the confusion in her eyes as I feel the weight in my hand.
“What… how did you do that?” She asked as I lowered my hand to take a better look at the sword in it.
Without even replying to her, I move quickly between the shadows as The Unseen attacks. Their sharp teeth make chopping sounds as the sword swooshes in and out, as I bring it up and down before turning around, letting the blade cut through the air and cutting most of the creatures in half, before the sounds around me vanish and we’re plunged in silence.
My heart sprints fast, as my breathing is erratic. I’m kneeling on my right knee, my left leg stretched as the hand that holds the sword is gripping it tightly. The sword is sideways the tip pointing to the west, as my free hand is extended upwards to the sky.
“How did you do that?” Aunt Emma asks as footsteps grow closer as I look at her.
“I don’t know, I thought about it.” I say as Aunt Emma moves to look at the sword and Granddad appears beside her before pulling her back.
“Don’t touch it.” He says sternly before he looks at me and then smiles. “It’s the equivalent of Excalibur in our lineage.” He tells us as the rest join us.
“But it was Jebediah’s sword.” Uncle Aaron says pointing to the hilt of the sword as I turn it around after standing up and looking at the Ashdown family shield on it.
“Wait…” Zachary and Nicolas say at the same time.
“What does that mean?” Dr. Sterling asks confused as Gustavo moves closer and then looks at the sword sideways.
“You’re going to need a nice sheath for that. The blade is poisonous for anyone who isn’t a Caretaker.” Gustavo tells me as my eyes move to the blade.
“It means that our little Nica is your boss.” Zachary says laughing as he pats Nicolas’ back hard.
“That’s not what it means.” Nicolas says looking around before his eyes fall on Granddad and Grandmother.
“It’ll be fine… I’m sure that Danica won’t abuse her power.” Grandmother says as Nicolas shakes his head.
