I remember my favorite year was 1985…my Members Only jacket was keeping me warm, The Cosby Show was on its second season, and Michael J. Fox was on
his way Back To The Future;
I was so excited about heading back; because
that was the year I was going to be officially a part of the dance squad called the
Titanides. Yep, that was so cool, I
was always a shy kid; the stories in my head and my favorite romance novels
were more real to me than real life at times; so it was a big surprise to many
people, myself included… that I had tried out for the squad and made it! The
one thing I loved almost as much as I love books and writing, was dance…
So that year when preparing for school, I was ready; I had gotten really
hyped up by those department stores” back to school “commercials…you know the
ones where the kids are all dressed up in their school finest… sitting and chatting
on the school steps, or standing at the lockers. There girls were cute and the
guys hot, everyone perfectJ
Oh yes, those commercials were the highlight of getting ready for the new school
year, they to me were the epitome of the fun to be had in high school…,okay,
okay, I know that is somewhat lame, but hey, we didn’t have all the ultra cool
teen shows that depicts every detail of
what was happening in the sacred walls of teendom, like there is now;
and 1985, I had decided, was going to be the best of all; I had shed my
wallflower shell and I was prepared to go in happy and come out just as happy,
I was looking for the best year ever!
Did this happen? Well, of course life
isn’t the perfect commercial, and yes, I had fun being a part of the dance squad,
and I did become more outgoing less shy. But there were still challenges and
hard work to be done in my school work and in the extracurricular. I made new
friends, new enemies, just like anyone else… lol and I was just a regular girl.
Although yes, 1985 was memorable because that year was the first time I
realized that happiness is a choice, not perfect hair, face, friends or status.
Happiness comes from the inside, being happy with who you are, regardless of
others opinions.
So I wish for all of you who are heading
back to, dream, strive and achieve; the choice is yours!

Thanks so much Marilyn for having me!:)
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Michelle. That's so true about happiness coming from the inside. I wish I had known that when I was a teen, all those years ago.
ReplyDeleteThank-you:) Yes, if we all were able to re-do our teen years with the knowledge we have now that would be an awesome experience!
